Colds and ‘Flu

There is a difference between a cold and ‘flu but what about prevention?
People ask me what is the difference between a cold and ‘flu? ‘Flu comes on very quickly and is usually accompanied by a high temperature, persistant cough and general debility. A cold has a slower onset and usually involves congestion in the nose with or without a cough.

When you have ‘flu, bedrest is essential, lots of fluids and paracetamol (two tablets four times a day for adults). If you are in one of the ‘at risk’ groups e.g. over 65, have a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart or lung disease then you should get a ‘flu jag from the doctor. People who have an allergy to eggs cannot take the ‘flu jag because the vaccine is grown in eggs and therefore they may have a serious allergic reaction to the injection.

Is there any way of preventing colds and ‘flu? I always say to my patients to look after their bodies. Having the right nutrition with moderate exercise and a balance in their lives (not too much stress) will mean that their own immune system should be strong.

During the winter it is a good idea to supplement with Vitamin C and Echinacea.
